The trial of Senate President Bukola Saraki and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu for alleged forgery of the senate standing rules that brought them into office during the senate leadership election in June last year, has been adjourned to October 7th.

The presiding judge, Justice Yusf Haliru, adjourned the case following a application by the counsel to the Federal government and prosecuting counsel, Aliyu Umar, who asked for more time to reply a motion by the defendants challenging the jurisdiction of the court to hear the case.

Saraki and Ekweremadu had filed a fresh motion challenging the jurisdiction of the court to hear the case of alleged forgery. They asked the court to summarily dismiss the case against them. Their application hwever did not get to the prosecuting counsel until Monday September 26th.

The prosecuting counsel told the court that since the motion was in relation to the fundamental right of defendants to fair hearing, he needs to properly prepare his response to the motion.

“Just now I became aware of a motion by the first defendant and served on us on September 26. The motion is fundamental because it is asking your lordship to decline jurisdiction and quash the charges. It is a short notice‎. I have not filed anything‎. It is fundamental to fair hearing. Under the circumstances, I will ask for an adjournment to enable me to respond to the motion.” he said
Justice Haliru thereafter adjourned the case till Friday October 7th. Saraki and Ekweremadu are standing trial alongside former Clerk of the National Assembly, Salisu Maikasuwa, and his deputy, Benedict Efeturi.

HARDSHIP BITES HARDER: Buhari, Others to be Summoned by National Assembly

Strong indications have emerged that the leadership of the National Assembly might have agreed to invite President Muhammadu Buhari to address now that he has returned to the country.

It was learnt that the decision is the outcome of the meetings of Senate and House of Reps principal officers, hosted by Senate President Bukola Saraki at his private residence in the night.

A Senate principal officer, who pleaded anonymity, said the both chambers deliberated extensively on the current economic situation in the country and came up with some pragmatic solutions.

The source told The Punch that the meeting, held on Wednesday night, agreed that Buhari should first be invited to tell the federal parliamentarians the specific steps that his administration is taking to take Nigeria out of recession.

He said, “It was Speaker Yakubu Dogara, who led the House of Representatives’ team to the meeting, that suggested the idea and it was adopted by leaders of both chambers.

“The president was asked to come and brief us on the specific efforts he had taken with his economic team to tackle the recession.”

He added that some principal officers of the Senate also suggested that the National Assembly should ask the President to reshuffle his cabinet with a view to injecting new hands to come up with fresh ideas on how to save the nation’s economy from total collapse.

The lawmakers were said to have agreed to set up a committee to compile the recommendations of all the senators that spoke during last week’s debate on the economy and come up with a report.

Dogara was said to have assured the Senators that the House of Reps would support their position.

Another senators confirmed the move, saying: “It is true that President Buhari would be invited to address the joint session of the National Assembly on the economy. It would be an opportunity for him to get feedback from Nigerians because all of us are just coming from our constituencies and we know what our people are going through.”

SERIOUSLY? Pastor Stuck In Shrine While Destroying Idols

A pastor, identified as Wale Fagbere, became motionless while he was destroying a shrine in Ketu, a community in Ayetoro, Yewa North area of Ogun State.
The pastor, whose church address could not be ascertained as at the time of reporting, reportedly became motionless and speechless after he had allegedly destroyed some shrines in the town.

It was gathered that the cleric was reported to have told his congregation that he had a revelation to destroy all the shrines in Ketu community.

After being found transfixed in the shrine, residents who saw him raised the alarm, following which custodians of the shrines came to the place.

The Native Doctor insisted they had to perform rituals before the pastor could regain his sense.

The rites were performed following the intervention of Alaye of Ayetoro, Oba Abdulaziz Adelakun, who appealed to the priests to ‘release’ him.

The state acting Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident, adding that the cleric might be charged for “sacrilege and malicious damage.”

He said, “The command got the report at its division in Ayetoro that one Evangelist Wale Fagbere went to Ketu to destroy traditional worshippers’ shrines. After the destruction, the man became motionless and could not talk.

“When the policemen visited the place, the traditionalists said the subject could not be taken away until some rites were performed. The victim was revived and handed over to his family for more spiritual cleansing.”

Popular Prince, Two Others Killed In Cult Battle In Lagos

Young men are losing their lives violently, due to cultism. Residents of Surulere Estate, Alagbado, in Lagos now live in fear after cult members invaded the area, hacking a prince and 2 others to death.

In what could be described as a supremacy battle in the area between Aiye and Eiye confraternity, eye witness account said the group that invaded the area last Tuesday night sang in celebration after hacking to death a young man, identified as the son of a traditional ruler in the area town.

Two persons were said to have been killed in the same area earlier.

The clash, which was said to have begun last Sunday, lasted through Wednesday, leaving 3 persons dead and several others injured.

A resident, who pleaded anonymity for fear of being attacked, narrated:
“At about 10:30pm, there were gunshots and we (landlords) came out. We heard the young man received a call and dashed out at that night to buy airtime. We heard that his guardian pleaded it was late but he insisted going out to get airtime saying the call was important. But unknown to him, the cultists ambushed him and shot at him twice.

We heard the gun shots did not penetrate and he ran. But his assailants gave him a hot chase and hacked him severally on the head. We were told that his killers also broke the window of the house where they caught up with their opponent, warning the occupant: 'We have not come for you, don’t ever attempt to call the police'.
"We also heard that they celebrated the killing of the young man, singing: Uso uso, uso! ….‘Muso, muso, muso. ….hey!! muso, muso, muso! ….hey!!! He was wearing a charm round his waist which perhaps prevented the gunshot from penetrating.”

Lagos Police PRO, SP Dolapo Badmus, in a text message, said: “On 21/9/16, at about 7:30pm, information received from AIT Road, Alagbado indicated that two cult members engaged in a physical fight that led to their deaths.
